BB size is one of the most common dahlia size (4-6″ blooms). They are comparable in size to a large rose fully open.
Florists love them because they are easy to arrange. Growers like them because a plant can put out a lot more blooms when they are this size. Gardeners like them because it is much less likely that a BB bloom will be broken off by the wind, unless very loaded. Dahlia exhibitors like them because of their compact size with about the same number of petals means the flower will appear very full and typically more symmetrical (desirable for show winning).
BB size dahlias typically will have between 5-20 blooms on the same plant at a time, so they’re great to have if you really love to have fresh cut flowers in the house, for friends and still have plenty in the garden. These need to be frequently deadheaded to encourage blooms all season long. (Rats, I have to bring MORE blooms in the house, lol)
The BB size is a popular size in our society, we split them up to make it easier to view and vote on. The 3 forms in this group are: Formal Decorative (FD), Informal Decorative (ID) and Semi-cactus (SC).
